Issued: 0530hrs Friday 26th January 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Dry across central & eastern Europe

Friday
Heavy rain passes eastwards across Spain, followed by heavy showers for Portugal. Clusters of showers also affect north-east Spain and southern France, accompanied by strong southerly winds. Mainly dry for Italy, although rather cloudy in the west. Brighter around the Adriatic, and plenty of sunshine for the Balkan states. South-eastern Europe remains cold, widely below freezing from the Czech Republic to Hungary and Romania. Cloudy and cool for Greece , highs 8C. Snow showers for Turkey. Cool and showery too for Cyprus.
Outbreaks of rain affect western France, and much of the country will be cloudy and cool. Brighter skies for central Europe, with plenty of sunshine across Germany and Poland. High pressure centred over eastern Europe maintains dry weather, which also extends across Scandinavia. Some sunshine for southern Sweden. Temperatures just above freezing around the Baltic.

Saturday
Pressure builds from the west across Iberia, bringing a fair day to Portugal and much of Spain. Areas of thundery showers affect the western Mediterranean as low pressure drifts eastwards - some rain may clip eastern Spain. Showers or some longer spells of rain affect southern France and western Italy.
Cloudy and damp across western Europe, but brighter toward the east of the continent, with extensive dry weather. Sunshine for Poland, Slovakia and the Balkans. It remains bitterly cold across south-eastern Europe, staying below zero for many countries by day, and dipping to -10C or locally much lower overnight. Dry conditions around the Baltic, whilst some rain affects western Norway, snow in the mountains.
